Tricia Brock, “The Road”

This album came out a while back but I’ve REALLY been wanting to listen to it so I figured I might as well do an album review while I’m here!  Tricia Brock is the lead singer of the most definitely AWESOMETACULAR Christian punk-rock band Superchic[k].  I love Superchick and so I’ve been really excited/interested in seeing what this album is like.

Breath of God
This album is NOTHING like what I was expecting!  🙂  Superchick does fun songs with a Christian back story…loud electric music with little verbose reference to spirituality.  Then this song comes on and it’s a beautifully moving acoustic worship anthem.  But Tricia Brock kills it.  She has an amazing voice that sounds good on the SoupChic stuff but it sounds OUTSTANDING on these more peaceful praise anthems!

Another perfect example of her amazing capabilities as a laid back worship vocalist.  This song is an any Sunday praise song…fantastic…and nothing like what I was expecting at ALL!

You Are My Shepherd
This song is coming straight of my FAVORITE chapter of the Bible of all times.  The chorus is basically just Psalm 23 set to music:

“The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that i need.  He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams.  he renews my strength.  He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name.  Even when i walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.  Your road and your staff protect and comfort me.  You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies.  You honor me by anointing my head with oil.  my cup overflows with blessings.  Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the lord forever.”  Psalm 23:1-6

You Hear
You had me sold on this song as SOON as I heard the cello!  I’m a sucker for a cello.  Jeremiah 33:3 says, “Call to me, and I will answer you;”  This song is the reminder to us all that no matter what we are going through, God hears us.  “The power will be…not with him who speaks…but with Him who hears.”  I love this song!

Jesus I Am Resting
This is a sweet, sweet song.  King James reminiscent with it’s thy and thous and hast.  🙂  But…uhm…there is NOTHING wrong with that.  Okay…EXPLAINED!!!  This is a hymn!  I love her rendition of it…and I love this hymn.  I’ve never heard it before.  I love being reminded that, Contemporary Christian Music is GREAT but those classic old hymns still speak to each and every one of us!

The Altar
“This place is sacred.  This place is secret.”  This is a beautiful ballad.  It is so peaceful, and beautiful.  This song gives such peace.  If you are in need of quiet or peace…you will definitely want to check this song out!!!

Powerful reminder that God is ALWAYS in charge and that God comes through for ALL of us ALways!

So many of these songs need only one line of explanation.  This is an amazing rock/soft rock worship album and some of these songs can’t be made complex.  And most of them SHOULDN’T be.  Nothing is impossible for my GOD!!!  It i so true praise His holy name!

Everything In Me
I’ve been reading Rob Bell’s “Love Wins” for a class and I’m towards the end of the book.  He talks about how our spirituality as Christians should be so overwhelming that we HAVE to share it with people.  This song expresses everything about Christ that is overwhelming.  And responds with such overwhelming power that we give EVERYTHING to Christ!

I love that I used this word three times in the last song description…and now this is the next song.  The lyrics are nice, but I think this is my least favorite song on the album.  It’s too something that I don’t like.  (How was that for vague criticism?)  It does make an “overwhelming” point in the refrain though: “I belong to you and you (God) belong to me”.  That is in deed overwhelming!

Broken for Love’s Sake
Folk and roots/bluegrass feel is awesome.  I love the banjos and the male harmony part.  This song has a unique sound and the lyrics are absolutely beautiful!

Desert Song
This is a cover of Natalie Grant’s AMAZING worship song.  I absolutely LOVE this particular song and Tricia Brock did an awesome job with it.  She really made it her own even though her voice sounds a LOT like Grant’s now that I’m hearing this!

Your Grace is Amazing
This is a beautiful song, I think the musical part is my favorite on the album.  It is also the most obvious praise anthem.  It just requires hands in the air and a large group singing out loud!

My personal opinion is that you may or may NOT need the whole album.  A lot of the songs sound a like.  There are some songs on this album that everyone should have and some that will be awesome solely dependent on your current state in life.  I would suggest you check this album out on Spotify or some other venue before you run out and buy it.  You may just need some of the tracks.  However, if you like Natalie Grant, Martha Munizi, or any of the other female worship leaders then you’ll like these songs.  Tricia Brock can rock the SoupChic punk rock and the soulful worship of this solo album.  God bless her!
